Itinerary

Day 1Marrakech → Aït Benhaddou → Ouarzazate → Zagora

Depart Marrakech in the morning, crossing the Tizi n’Tichka Pass in the Atlas Mountains. Visit Aït Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage ksar, then continue to Ouarzazate, known as Morocco’s “Hollywood.” After lunch, drive through the Draa Valley, with its endless palm groves and ancient kasbahs. Reach Zagora in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2Zagora → Mhamid → Erg Chigaga Desert

After breakfast, continue south to the last village before the Sahara, Mhamid. From here, the road disappears, and a 4×4 takes you off-road across rocky desert and sandy plains into the dunes of Erg Chigaga, one of the most remote areas of the Moroccan Sahara. Upon arrival, take a camel ride into the dunes at sunset. Dinner, traditional music, and overnight in a desert camp under the stars.

Day 3Erg Chigaga → Lake Iriqui → Foum Zguid → Ouarzazate

Wake up early to watch the sunrise over the vast Erg Chigaga dunes. After breakfast, embark on a thrilling 4×4 drive through the desert, passing by the dry Lake Iriqui and fossil fields before reaching Foum Zguid. Lunch en route. Continue to Ouarzazate in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4Ouarzazate → Atlas Mountains → Marrakech

After breakfast, visit Kasbah Taourirt or the film studios of Ouarzazate, then drive back across the High Atlas Mountains. Stops along the way include mountain passes and Berber villages. Arrive in Marrakech by late afternoon.

FAQ

How many days should I plan for a desert tour from Marrakech?

Most travelers choose a 3-day / 2-night tour to reach the Merzouga dunes and enjoy a full desert experience. Shorter 2-day tours to Zagora are possible but involve more driving. Longer itineraries (4–5 days) allow for a slower pace with extra stops in valleys and kasbahs.

What kind of accommodation is included on tours?

Accommodation depends on your chosen package. Standard tours include comfortable hotels or riads along the way and a desert camp in shared or private tents. Luxury upgrades are available with ensuite tents, hot showers, and private dining areas under the stars.

Do the tours include camel rides in the desert?

Yes, all of our Sahara tours include a sunset and/or sunrise camel trek across the dunes. For those who prefer, 4×4 vehicles can be arranged for dune transfers.

What should I pack for a desert tour?

We recommend bringing:

  • Light clothing for the day, warm layers for cool desert nights

  • Comfortable walking shoes

  • A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen

  • A small backpack for essentials (water, snacks, camera)
Large luggage can be safely stored in the vehicle or at the camp.
