This express desert tour from Marrakech is perfect for travelers short on time who still want to experience Morocco’s Sahara. In just two days, you’ll cross the High Atlas mountains, visit the UNESCO kasbah of Aït Benhaddou, and spend a night in a desert camp in Zagora, located in the Draa Valley.
Though the dunes of Zagora are smaller than Merzouga, this trip includes a camel trek at sunset, a campfire dinner, and stargazing — offering an authentic desert taste in a shorter itinerary.
The Zagora Desert is closer to Marrakech than Merzouga, making it the ideal choice for a quick desert escape. You’ll see mountain passes, palm-filled valleys, and ancient kasbahs before reaching the desert.
At the camp, enjoy tea, traditional meals, music, and the serenity of the desert night. This short but sweet adventure is often a favorite for those on tight schedules.
Depart Marrakech early and cross the High Atlas mountains via the scenic Tizi n’Tichka Pass. Stop at viewpoints and small Berber villages before arriving at Aït Benhaddou, the famous UNESCO-listed ksar. After exploring, continue through Ouarzazate and into the palm groves of the Draa Valley, Morocco’s largest oasis. By late afternoon, reach Zagora, where camels are waiting for a sunset trek to the camp. Dinner, music, and overnight in a desert tent.
Wake early to watch sunrise over the desert, followed by breakfast at the camp. Ride camels (or transfer by 4×4) back to Zagora village. Then, begin the return journey to Marrakech with stops in Ouarzazate to visit Kasbah Taourirt or the film studios. Arrive in Marrakech in the evening.
This is a 2-day / 1-night adventure, featuring scenic drives through the Atlas Mountains, stops at valleys and kasbahs, and a magical night in a desert camp near Zagora.
Yes! You’ll enjoy a sunset camel trek across the Zagora dunes. For those who prefer, 4×4 transfers can be arranged, but camel riding at sunset is the highlight.
You’ll stay in a comfortable desert camp, with options for private or shared tents. Along the way, selected riads or guesthouses provide cozy overnight stops. Luxury upgrades with ensuite tents and private dining under the stars are available.
Essentials include light clothing for the day, warm layers for desert nights, comfortable shoes, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a small backpack for water, snacks, and a camera. Large luggage can be safely stored in the vehicle.
