Itinerary

Day 1Marrakech → Aït Benhaddou → Ouarzazate → Zagora

Depart Marrakech in the morning, crossing the Tizi n’Tichka Pass in the Atlas Mountains. Visit Aït Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage ksar, then continue to Ouarzazate, known as Morocco’s “Hollywood.” After lunch, drive through the Draa Valley, with its endless palm groves and ancient kasbahs. Reach Zagora in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2Zagora → Mhamid → Erg Chigaga Desert

After breakfast, continue south to the last village before the Sahara, Mhamid. From here, the road disappears, and a 4×4 takes you off-road across rocky desert and sandy plains into the dunes of Erg Chigaga, one of the most remote areas of the Moroccan Sahara. Upon arrival, take a camel ride into the dunes at sunset. Dinner, traditional music, and overnight in a desert camp under the stars.

Day 3Erg Chigaga → Lake Iriqui → Foum Zguid → Ouarzazate

Wake up early to watch the sunrise over the vast Erg Chigaga dunes. After breakfast, embark on a thrilling 4×4 drive through the desert, passing by the dry Lake Iriqui and fossil fields before reaching Foum Zguid. Lunch en route. Continue to Ouarzazate in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4Ouarzazate → Atlas Mountains → Marrakech

After breakfast, visit Kasbah Taourirt or the film studios of Ouarzazate, then drive back across the High Atlas Mountains. Stops along the way include mountain passes and Berber villages. Arrive in Marrakech by late afternoon.

FAQ

What makes the 4-day Erg Chigaga desert tour special?

This 4-day / 3-night adventure takes you deeper into the Sahara, reaching the remote Erg Chigaga dunes, which are less crowded and more dramatic than Zagora. The extended itinerary allows for relaxed travel, multiple desert nights, and scenic stops along the Atlas Mountains and Draa Valley.

Are camel treks included, and how are they arranged?

Absolutely! You’ll experience both sunset and sunrise camel treks, giving you the full magic of the dunes. For those who prefer a faster journey, 4×4 transfers are available for parts of the desert ride, but riding camels across Erg Chigaga is the highlight.

What type of accommodation can I expect on this tour?

Accommodation includes traditional desert camps with private or shared tents, and carefully selected riads or guesthouses on the route. Luxury options are available, featuring ensuite tents, hot showers, and private desert dining experiences.

What should I pack for a 4-day desert expedition?

Essentials include light, breathable clothing for the day, warm layers for chilly desert nights, sturdy walking shoes, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a small backpack for water, snacks, and a camera. Larger luggage can be stored securely in the vehicle during desert travel.
